The U.S. Air Force deployed three B-2 Spirits (photo) to Guam, an American strategic bomber that is able to carry 16 nuclear bombs.

The U.S. Department of Defense said on Aug. 7, “Three B-2 Spirit aircraft in the 509th Bomb Wing (509 BW) of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) were deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.” The bombers were accompanied by 220 Airmen to the Anderson base.

“The B-2 Stealth deployment was conducted as a part of the routine training deployment in aims to provide global strike capability and extended deterrence against potential adversaries. This training deployment demonstrates continuing U.S. commitment to global strategic bomber operations throughout the Asia-Pacific region,” said the Department of Defense.

Although the U.S. Military said the Stealth deployment was a part of routine training, the move seems to be a response to North Korea which has been continuing provocations including the 4th testing of nuclear weapons. The U.S. deployed two B-2 Spirits to Guam last January, right before North Korea’s third nuclear testing. Immediately after the North’s nuclear experiment in March, the U.S. Military carried out unprecedented public bombing training on the Korean peninsula.

Equipped with stealth feature to make itself less visible to radar, B-2 Spirit has been deployed during the war in Afghanistan and the bombing mission in Libya. It is stated as a weapon that North Korea dreads the most.
