US, EU consider deeper sanctions against Russia

The U.S. and the European Union are vowing additional sanctions against Russia, claiming that Russia deeply intervened in the shot down of Malaysian Airlines’ flight MH17. Controversy over truth behind who fired the missile is poised to gradually evolve into a showdown between the West and Russia.

Appearing on five U.S. television networks, including CNN, CBS and Fox News, one after another on Sunday (local time), U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said, “There`s a build-up of extraordinary circumstantial evidence,” openly vowing additional sanctions. He also urged America’s European allies to join in the U.S.-led sanctions against Russia.

European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and French President Francois Hollande, held a three-way teleconference Sunday morning and agreed on imposing sanctions against Russia. European sanctions against Russia will be officially announced as early as Tuesday at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council condemned the shot down of Malaysian Airlines’ passenger jet at 3 p.m. on Monday (4 a.m. Tuesday, Korea Time), and adopted a resolution urging all countries to cooperate in investigation into the case conducted by the international community.
