U.S. news magazine Time has named Janet Yellen, a nominee for the next chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, as the most influential person in the world this year. A major U.S. daily named figure skating star Kim Yu-na, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as "People to Watch in Asia in 2014."

In its latest issue, Time magazine named Yellen as "The World`s Most Powerful Person" as she is expected to take office as chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve on February 1.

"If you believe, as many do, that unemployment is the major economic and social concern of our day, then it is no stretch to think Yellen is the most powerful person in the world right now," Time said. "Now it will be her job to get the Fed and the markets out of the biggest and most unconventional monetary program in history."

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal announced a list of "People to Watch in Asia in 2014." The daily said that despite a foot injury last year, Kim Yu-na is the favorite candidate for a gold medal in the Sochi Olympics, which opens on February 7.

Regarding Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, the paper noted that as he takes the reins over Samsung in a gradual shift that is likely to continue in 2014, he will be "tasked with keeping Samsung on top in a brutally competitive field."

Also attracting attention is how North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will respond to annual military exercises planned in South Korea early this year.

Among "People to Watch in 2014," the paper named 23 people including former U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton. The list included many other women leaders such as General Motors` first woman CEO Mary Barra, and Burmese pro-democracy movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
