The Presidential Office sent nomination motion of Justice Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn as prime minister to the National Assembly Tuesday as well as letter of personnel hearing request. Parliament leaders of the main and opposition parties decided to finalize selection of members of the special personnel hearing committee by Wednesday to start in earnest candidate verification.

The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy had submitted motion to dismiss Hwang, and plans to launch strict verification of him by addressing his personal profile and prosecutors` investigation on him while as justice minister. At a meeting with floor members on Tuesday, the party`s policy committee head Kang Ki-jung said, "Nomination of Hwang is a wrong act aimed to protect the regime," adding, "Withdrawal of his designation should be the beginning of policy shift."

Meanwhile, the Saenuri Party responded by saying the opposition party, which is mired in factional rift, is attempting to scratch Hwang whose morality and work capability have already been verified through the personnel hearing session for justice minister. Saenuri Party Rep. Park Min-shik told a radio program, "The opposition party is mired in internal discord between pro and anti Roh Moo-hyun factions. They are trying to turn public attention away from internal discord to Hwang."

The hearing will surround on whether Hwang was granted privilege for his former post, whether he carried out his pledge to donate his excess lawyer`s fee made at the hearing for justice minister position, suspicion on him having been exempt from military service and religious bias. The opposition parties claim that when Hwang was probing into the National Intelligence Service`s online posting case whether he prevented prosecutors from applying the Public Official Election Law. The main and opposition parties are likely to engage in a fierce battle.

The main opposition party designated Rep. Woo Won-shik, known to have a strong steely character, as opposition party assistant administrator of the special hearing committee, and is looking for members to fill the remaining positions. To counterattack, the leading party is considering Rep. Kwon Sun-dong and Kim Do-eup, key lawyer-turned lawmakers, among others.
