The leading Saenuri Party supreme member Seo Chung-won was absent in all official events Tuesday, the first day since a new leadership was created. At the party convention on Monday, he lost to new leader Kim Moo-sung, who is de factor leader of non-mainstream.
Seo did not show up at the first official event in the morning at the National Cemetery in southern Seoul. He was also absent at the supreme council meeting, which was held to make full-out support for the July 30 by-election. In particular, he did not show up at the Presidential Office luncheon meeting with President Park Geun-hye and the new leadership team, arousing backbiting.
One of Seo`s staff said, "He will be treated in hospital. He suffered infection in throat as he talked much at the recent party convention election campaign," adding, "Party work will be difficult until this week." He was saying that Seo strived in election campaigns and failed to take care of health.
However, many in and outside of the party say this is a sign of conflict among leaders in the aftermath of the party convention. Some in the party speculated Seo taking steps for resignation, but Seo`s staff said, "Absolutely not."
