Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors sold a combined 33,777 vehicles in Russia last month, exceeding for the first time the sales of Russian carmaker AvtoVAZ that had constantly remained No. 1 there. The Russian auto market amounted to 2.91 million units sold last year, ranking seventh in the world after China, the U.S., Japan and etc.

According to the Korea Automotive Research Institute under Hyundai Motor, Hyundai-Kia controlled 16.9 percent of the Russian market in the month of June, exceeding AvtoVAZ (15.1 percent). Kia sold 17,023 units and Hyundai distributed 16,754, ranking No. 2 and No. 3 as individual companies, respectively. AvtoVAZ is selling automobiles with the Lada brand in Russia. As Renault-Nissan Alliance took over AvtoVAZ in 2012, the three companies took up a combined 29.7 percent of the Russian market, larger than the combined market share of Hyundai-Kia.

Hyundai-Kia achieved stellar performance in the market, because the two companies saw their sales slightly edge down just 1.9 percent in Russia, while the overall auto sales in the market tumbled 17.4 percent in June year-on-year due to economic recession caused by rising inflation and the Ukraine crisis. The Hyundai Solaris and the Kia Rio, which are strategic models in Russia, had 10,565 and 8,696 units sold, respectively, ranking first and second among the import cars.
