There is still a faint hope.
If Korea wants to make it into the round of 16 in the 2014 Brazil World Cup, it must beat Belgium on Friday. And it also should watch the result of a match between Russia and Algeria, which takes place in the same time slot.
Korea has a tie and a loss (one point and minus two goal differentials) as of Monday. It fell to the bottom of Group H, as it fell behind Russia with a tie and a loss (one point and plus one goal differential) due to the goal differential. Algeria with a win and a loss (three points and plus one goal differential) is the second and Belgium with two consecutive wins (six points and plus two goal differentials) has advanced to the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of the remaining games. Who moves on will come down to the order of points, goal differentials, goals scored, and win records.
○ If Korea loses to or ties with Belgium, Korea will be eliminated
If Korea loses to or ties with Belgium, Korea will be eliminated from the tournament due to the lack of points. Even if Korea defeats Belgium, if Algeria beats Russia, Korea will be removed. The only chance for Korea to move forward to the round of 16 is when Korea beats Belgium and Algeria draws or loses to Russia.
○ If Korea beats Belgium and Algeria ties with Russia
If Korea beats Belgium and Algeria ties with Russia, Russia will be eliminated and Korea and Algeria will have a tie with four points. Then, Korea should not only win but also make up at least three goals against Belgium. Algeria scored five points and Korea three points. If Algeria ties with Russia 0 to 0 and Korea defeats Belgium 3 to 0, then Korea can move forward into the next round because Korea is ahead of Algeria in goals scored. If Algeria ties with Russia 1 to 1, Korea must win Belgium at least 4 to 1.
○ If Korea wins Belgium and Russia wins Algeria
When Korea defeats Belgium and Algeria loses to Russia, both Korea and Russia will have the same points of four. Then, Algeria will drop to the bottom of the group with three points. Then, Korea and Russia will have to compare goal differentials and goals scored. Russia has one goal scored. If Russia wins Algeria 1 to 0 and Korea wins Belgium 2 to 0, both teams will have the same goal differentials but Korea will make it to the round of 16 because it has more goals scored.
Given this, Korea needs to make a big win of at least three goal differentials in the match against Belgium.
