China sentenced 13 people to death for terrorist activities in northwest China`s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, an act that reflects zero tolerance on terrorism. At the same time, the Chinese government is utilizing "carrots" in Xinjiang by expanding traffic network there, which however is speculated against its effectiveness.

State-owned Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that Intermediate People`s Court in Xinjiang`s prefectures of Aksu, Turpan and Hotan screened and ratified death sentence passed on 13 terrorists Monday. Local courts said they were involved in seven different cases.

Three defendants were convicted of organizing and leading terrorists to attack police station, hotel, government office building and other venues, killing 24 police officers and civilians and injuring 23 others on June 26 last year, the courts said, adding, "The latest death sentence demonstrates a resolute anti-terrorism policy by the China Communist Party and the government. Terrorists will be strictly treated in the future based on judicial functions."
