Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin`s right toenail injury is worse than expected. Unable to wear baseball cleats, Ryu joined Tuesday`s team training session at the Dodgers Stadium in sneakers.

"I have never been injured this much," Ryu said. "My toenail will fall off soon. Still, it will take less than two weeks before I recover completely." He played only catch, without performing defense practices or running exercises.

"He`s going to see the doctor today with his toenail, to see if he`ll be able to land on that and use it the way he needs to," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told a news briefing, avoiding questions about starters for the three domestic regular season openers against the San Diego Padres this weekend. "We`ll have a little bit better idea moving forward of what he`s going to be able or not be able to do, and that will help us with the planning of our pitching this weekend."

It is now unclear whether the left-hander will pitch in any of the Padres games. He has days left before the games. If the current condition continues, however, he has no time to prepare for a weekend game.
