The Japanese ambassador to Korea has filed a complaint with the Korean Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry over the visit to the Kuril Islands by Korean lawmakers, a ministry source said Wednesday.

“Masatoshi Muto, Japanese ambassador to Korea, visited the Korean Foreign Ministry Tuesday afternoon to complain about a visit to the Kuril Islands by Korean lawmakers.”

Muto reportedly expressed regret over the lawmakers’ visit in a meeting with Vice Foreign Minister Park Seok-hwan. Muto is known to have said, “It is hoped that such a visit would never happen again.”

Park reportedly replied, “The lawmakers visited the Kuril Islands in a private capacity and this has nothing to do with the Korean government.”
