Video footage of the thief who stole the ashes of the late actress Choi Jin-sil has been capture by surveillance cameras, police said yesterday.

A man with a robust physique and short hair appeared at the cemetery in Yangsuri, Gyeonggi Province, where Choi was buried, at 9:55 p.m. Aug. 4. He stayed around her grave for more than 40 minutes then disappeared for a while.

He returned with a sack in his hand and wore a climbing hat with a broad brim. At 10:44 p.m., the man took a hammer out of the sack and began smashing the grave. He then pulled the urn containing Choi’s ashes from the grave and disappeared at exactly 10:46 p.m.

He returned a minute later, covered the broken part of the grave with frames, and disappeared again. The man returned at 3:36 a.m. the next day and cleaned the grave with water and a dust cloth before leaving at 3:41 a.m.

Surveillance camera footage showed that the crime occurred 10 days before the date police assumed it had occurred. Police will track down the suspect after reviewing the footage more closely.

The suspect is believed to be in his mid-30s to early 50s.

A police source said, “The suspect appears skilled in handling marble and is likely to have had an accomplice,” adding, “We are tracking down the suspect by talking to ex-cons who committed similar crimes and those involved in the marble business.”
