The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade added the director-level position of “Bio- Study Support Ambassador” in order to support the embryonic stem cell studies of Hwang Woo-suk, a Seoul National University professor.

A ministry official said on August 1 that a newly appointed ambassador would be sent to Seoul National University to provide government assistance for Hwang, and that the ambassador’s tenure would be one year and would mainly focus on assisting matters necessary for the international contacts.

Jeong Hae-uk, an economy and trade researcher, has been appointed as the first ambassador.

“We asked Hwang and his team about what kind of assistance they needed and they told us that the team was having some difficulties handling international cooperation and projects, which was why we decided on an additional position,” according to the ministry
