Ryu Yoon-ji (Seoul National University) set a new competition record for the first time in nine years.

The 76th Dong-A Ilbo Swimming Competition was held at Asan Indoors Swimming Pool, at Asan, Chungnam on April 20 (sponsored by Dong-A Ilbo and managed by Korea Swimming Association). Ryu finished at 25.85 seconds in the women’s college freestyle 50m, beating the existing 1995 record of 27.05 seconds held by Lee Bo-eun of Kyoungseong University.

Ryu’s record is only 0.22 seconds short of the Korean record of 25.63 seconds held by Seon So-eun of Cho-yeon middle school which was made at the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

Record holder of freestyle 100m, Ryu has gained 2kg and has done steady weight training, so it was expected that she would make a new Korean record. But her efforts were in vain because she hadn’t trained for a week ahead of the tournament because of a severe case of the flu.

Jeong Doo-hee (Kangwon provincial office) finished at 54.91 seconds, only 0.3 seconds off of his Korean record of 54.61 seconds in the men’s adult butterfly 100m, only achieving a new competition record.

Lee Chung-hee (Kangwon Provincial Office) finished in first place with a new competition record of 23.20 seconds in the men’s adult freestyle 50m, confirming short distance ability. Lee is a promising swimmer who at 1m90cm and 87kg, can match western swimmers.

In the men’s middle school freestyle 200m, a breathtaking race was done in which the first three finishing swimmers all set new competition records. Park Tae-hwan (3rd grade of Daecheong middle school) finished in 1st place at 1 minute 55.23 seconds.

In the synchronized swimming high school duet, Lee Sol-ip and Yang Joo-hee of Ahnsan Seong-an high school captured a gold medal with 86.194 points in total. Lee Sol-ip also placed first in solo, being selected the MVP of synchronized swimming. In the college duet, Ehwa Women’s University’s Lee Min-ji and Ko Yeon-a won the competition.
