U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned “Sanctuary Cities” as part of a series of his strong reactions to illegal immigrants at the southern border of the United States. He said that he would transfer apprehended illegal immigrants to “Sanctuary Cities” that oppose the federal government’s immigration policy and deny collaboration on detaining and deporting illegal immigrants.

President Trump said in a tweet on Sunday that the United States has the absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities. “We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the State of California, which is well known for its poor management & high taxes!” San Francisco is a district under the jurisdiction of his political foe, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. President Trump repeatedly said that illegal immigrants include a group of criminals such as gangsters, drug dealers and human traffickers.

“Sanctuary Cities” include Democrat-led large cities such as San Francisco, Chicago and New York City. Against this backdrop, the Democratic Party has showed strong opposition, defining his policy review as a political retaliation. According to The Washington Post, the measure had been reviewed late last year and February but it was not accepted due to high cost. It has been thought that President Trump has tried to put Democrats into trouble for not agreeing with his illegal immigration policy by remarking an impractical solution.

There is controversy over the legitimacy of the measure as well. The Reuter's News Agency said that the measure may violate clauses in the Federal Law, such as a ban of spending government budget for political purpose. Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson told ABC that there is no legal ground to implement the measure.
