According to "Asia Pacific's Most Innovative Universities" announced by Reuters, KAIST has topped the list in 2017. The two-year winning university was followed by Seoul National University (SNU, 2nd) and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTEC, 4th). The recent list shows that Korean universities display high innovations among other Asian countries.

In partnership with research firm "Clarivate Analytics," Reuters analyzed competencies of top 75 Asian universities from 2010 to 2015. The rank was compiled for the second time followed by last year, which analyzed data from 2009 to 2014. KAIST continued to top the list since 2016.

The list has been compiled by eval‎uating the competencies of industrial innovation of each university, based on the number of patent results and journals on industrialization. The rank eval‎uates the number of patents applied, registered, citated, rate of citations, its impact on academic articles, and international patents. "The No.1 KAIST received high points for its 923 patents applied for the past five years, along with frequent citations from external researchers," said Reuters.

SNU has climbed one step higher to the second position since last year, and POSTECH has also seen a one-step improvement at fourth. Sungkyunkwan University has risen from 8th in 2016 to 5th in 2017. Hanyang University has climbed five steps from 15th last year to 10th this year. In total, Chinese universities (including Hong Kong) have taken the majority with 25 institutions making on the list. Korea followed China with 22 universities, and Japan placed 19 names on the list. Other nations include Australia (5), Singapore (2) and India (1).
