Nationwide average temperature of April was 13.9 degrees, 1.7 degrees higher than usual (12.2 degrees), according to the weather characteristics of April released by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) on Monday. The April temperature was recorded as the second highest since 1973, when the KMA started to record average temperature across the country. The highest April temperature ever recorded was 14.9 degrees in 1998 (19 years ago).

"Migratory anticyclone and cyclone from the Southwest brought a warm Southwest current and frequent and strong sunlight during the day increased temperature," the weather agency said. "In fact, the duration of sunshine in April was 246.5 hours, the longest ever recorded. However, the amount of precipitation in April was 65 milliliters, or 83 percent of the normal year (78.5 milliliters )."

As the country broke the high temperature record in April, people began to worry about sweltering heat in this summer. From Monday, the KMA decided to provide the "Heat Index," which represents excessive heat warning for prevention of damages caused by summer heat waves. The KMA will issue the heat index for the next two days including the day of 3,770 areas nationwide twice a day (6 a.m. and 6 p.m.) on its webpage in five stages of "caution," "extreme caution," "warning," "danger," and "extreme danger."

"KMA will also provide actions to be taken according to each stage along with the index," KMA Administrator Ko Yun-hwa said.
