'Love Story' director Arthur Hiller dies at 92

Director Arthur Hiller (92) died on Wednesday at the age of 92 at his home in Los Angeles, the U.S. Hiller was best known for directing the 1970 romantic drama “Love Story.”

Hiller was born in Canada, where he started his career directing TV comedies. He later moved to Hollywood, the mecca of commercial movies, and shot nearly 70 movies and TV series since the 1960s.

His biggest box-office success was the enduring masterpiece “Love Story,” which left a famous quote; “Love means never having to say you're sorry.” Based on Erich Segal's novel published with the same title, the film adaptation pictures a tragic love between a wealthy Harvard law student and an Italian-American working-class music student. The movie ends with a tragic ending, as the heroine dies of leukemia. Actor Ryan O’Neal and actress Ali MacGraw became global celebrities thanks to the huge hit.

Hiller positioned himself as the godfather of the film industry, directing popular films in various genres. From 1993 to 1997, he chaired the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Academy Awards. In 2001, he received the “Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award” at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony for his contributions to the art of cinema.
