Seoul Archives to open in 2018. May. 20, 2016 07:54. by 황태호기자 taeho@donga.com. The Seoul Archives, which will maintain major archives of history in Seoul, will open in June 2018.

According to the Seoul metropolitan government on Thursday, a five-story building excluding two basement levels will be built on the former site of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with a total floor area of 15,004 square meters. Archive storage will be located on the two basement floors and a space for citizens will be on the first to third floor, and a processing space on the fourth floor.

Archive storage will be used to maintain and store some one million pieces of records ranging from land documents in the early 1910s to important city records with a mandatory retention period of at least 30 years and private documents reflecting each era. Citizens will be able to access documents and experience how documents are stored in a space for citizens.

The processing space will have a restoration room where experts restore tainted archives, an electronic media processing room allowing various archives, including documents and visual and audio records, and a visual and audio archive processing room.

“Records containing all policy procedures from the past until today will be delivered to and shared with our descendants through archives,” Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon said.
