Ancient characters from the Shilla Dynasty found on the walls of Seongryu cave in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, are gaining spotlight from scholars.

The 38 characters carved on the limestone near the exit of the cave are approximately 3 centimeters wide and 4 centimeters in height each. Only 30 of them are recognizable. Epigraph experts interpret the writings as a recording of a public officer visiting the cave on March 8 in King Jinheung`s 4th year.

Seongryu cave has long been an inspiration for many artists during history including a travel journal during the Goryeo Dynasty, poems and paintings during the Joseon Dynasty. “I could see more traces of engraved writings covered by stalactite on the walls near the exit. Further research is needed,”said Park Hong-guk, head of Uiduk University Museum and the first to discover the characters.
