The former Seongmu Church building with memories of Air Force Academy cadets for some 20 years from the 1960s will be registered as a cultural asset. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Wednesday that the former Seoul Air Force Academy Church, located at Boramae Park in Dongjak District, Seoul, is to be registered as a cultural property.

The building, which was known as Seongmu Church, was built within the former Air Force Academy campus (current Boramae Park) in 1964. Architect Choi Chang-gyu designed the building with 28,000 dollars of funds raised by U.S. Air Force soldiers and Christians within Korea and abroad.

The form of the roof, designed with steep slopes, and the inside area that emphasized verticality had been assessed to be a unique construction method that is different from a general construction method for a church at the time. As the Air Force Academy moved to Cheongwon County in North Chungcheong Province in 1985, the building had been used as a warehouse and operated as Dongjak Art Gallery, a local culture and art space, from 2013.
