“Your voice is prepared before it comes out of your mouth. When you are able to control your voice in advance, it becomes a huge advantage,” said Professor/Voice Coach Kim Min-jeong of the College of Musical Studies at Kyungbok Universityon Thursday. The Master Class at the Art Center Theatre of ChungAng Universitywas offered for the winners of the 2nd Dong-A Musical Concours held in August.

The eight winners, who are university, high school and middle school students, listened to lectures and were individually coached accompanies by the piano. The teachings were based on the Estill voice training method, which helped the students better understand how vocal organs work and vocalize voices that fit their roles. Using the Estill Voice method, which was founded in 1988 in the U.S., Professor Kim trained leading Korean musical actors including Jeong Seong-hwa, Park Geon-hyeong and Kang Pil-seok.

“I was impressed by the advanced level of the participants when I was the judge of the final round of the concours,” said the professor. "I saw great potential in the students today, with their quick ability to understand and immediately apply learnings in their songs."

Hwang Ji-hyun, who won the silver award in the high school competition, said that the class was an opportunity to understand more profoundly vocalization and how to apply in acting.

The third Dong-A Musical Concours will be held in August next year.
