“The English Patient,” the tragic love story by Michael Ondaatje, won the Golden Man Booker Prize. At a special event commemorating the prize’s 50th anniversary held in London Sunday (local time), it was the Canadian-Sri Lankan writer’s book that was crowned the best work of fiction from the last five decades of the Man Booker Prize.

A panel of specially appointed judges was asked to read the winning novels from one decade of the prize’s history since 1969 and narrowed the final candidates down to five. After a public vote online participated by some 9,000 people, “The English Patient,” a Booker Prize winner in 1992, won the Golden Man Booker Prize.
