Lush festivals surrounded in nature and historical sites including Austria’s Salzburg Music Festival, which is known to be the world’s best music festival, are waving their hands towards fans.

○ Austria’s Salzburg Music Festival

The Salzburg Music Festival is the world’s most prestigious art festival that started in 1920 at the home country of Mozart. The festival also got its fame as the “Festival of Karajan,” as the maestro led it from the 1960s to 1980s. The stage will be filled with world-class orchestras, conductors and singers, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Following Simon Rattle, the newly inaugurated principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 2019, Kirill Petrenko, known as the “next emperor of the world’s music,” will be participating with the orchestra. It is a rare opportunity to see the world’s best conductor and “his instruments” keep in tune a year ahead.

○ Switzerland’s Luzern Music Festival

The Luzern Music Festival, which was launched in 1938, will be held for one month from August 17. Top class musicians from across Europe have participated at this annual festival since 2003, adding fame to the festival, where Riccardo Chailly has been leading since 2016. The Luzern Culture and Conference Center, the venue of the festival, is popular with high quality sound. The Europe Chamber Orchestra Concert, conducted by Bernard Haitink, and Switzerland’s Romande Orchestra Concert, conducted by Jonathan Nott, will also be presented.

○ Open air orchestra festival

The Verona Opera Orchestra, which is the “epitome of open air orchestra,” opened on June 22 and will continue until September 1 at the Roman Amphitheatre of A.D. Verdi’s Aida, Bizet’s Carmen and Puccini’s Turandot, which were the first work to be performed in this festival as well as the symbol of festival, will be performed on this relic of A.D. 1.

Orange Festival, which is held at the roman theater in Orange, the southern part of France, is eval‎uated to have better sound as it is held at the drama theater of the Roman age. The festival, which is being held from June 20 to August 4, will provide performances such as Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Mozart’s Magic Flute.

The Bregenz Festival, where people can appreciate the stage on top of a lake in Bregenz, Austria, will present Bizet’s Carmen this year for two consecutive years.
