The novel “Familiar World,” written by author Hwang Sok-yong in 2011, will be produced as an animated movie. “We have completed the development contract for the joint production of animation with FUZZY BLU of England, which secured the publication right last month,” said Myung Films CEO Shim Jae-myung on Wednesday. “We are recently working on the scenario and artworks.” Myung Films has experience of producing “The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly,” an animation by director Oh Seong-yoon in 2011.

The “Familiar World” will be directed by Sylvain Chomet, an animation director who represents France. Director Chomet, who is an animator and composer, was a candidate for the Academy Awards four times. This is the first time for a foreign director to direct an animation based on a Korean novel. The novel “Familiar Word” is a work that demonstrates the growth of 14-year-old boy Ddakburi, who lives in the “Flower Island,” which motives the garbage dump. The novel is assessed to have pointed out the shadow of capitalism soaked in growth and consumption yet draws the hope sprouting inside.
