About 1,000 pieces of remains and artifacts that feature the grand and elaborate aspect of the Silla Dynasty’s royal Buddhist temple has been discovered in bulk at the Hwangbok temple in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

“By researching 4,670 m² of Ilwon, Nangsan from last August, we have discovered 1,000 artifacts including building remains of large, elaborate stones and building remains of the stylobate for the 12 zodiac animal deities,” said the Sunglim Cultural Property Research Center on Wednesday. The research center has been performing excavation in Nangsan with the permission of the Cultural Heritage Administration.

According to this investigation, remains of buildings, which provide information on the location of Hwangbok temple such as corridor (a long hallway with a roof), roads and ponds, have been identified in large scale. A gilt bronze statue of a Buddha laying down, a Buddha standing statue, and a Shinjang statue (a statue with engravings of Shinjang that guards the Buddha) were included among the 1,000 artifacts that have been excavated.
