Art museums evolve with social media

An event that invites world renowned art museums including the Guggenheim and the Pompidou Centre to seek ideas on how to communicate with visitors via social media.

The Asia Culture Center (ACC) announced that it will host the event under the theme of “ACC Round Table: Today’s Art Organizations and Social Media” at its Democracy Peace Exchange Center in Gwangju at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Guggenheim museums are known to upload live videos of their curators introducing expeditions on social media. Museum visitors appear in the video in real time, creating a lively vive and making viewers feel as if they are at the museum.

The Pompidou Centre uploads sensational drawings and pictures, stimulating curiosity. Sometimes digital features are added to make landscape and figures in prominent pictures move. Works by English pop-art icon David Hockney, who is known for his swimming pool paintings including “A Bigger Splash,” are uploaded, captivating viewers. A music-exclusive social media is also used to introduce exhibitions by sound.

The Brooklyn Museum in New York collaborates with the Whitney Museum to target visitors to Manhattan by hosting and publicizing exhibitions. By taking into characteristics of Brooklyn, the museums have planned and introduced works that focus on ethnic and gender diversity, highlighting their values for embracing diversity.

“Leading art museums around the world are known to connect various social events, such as International Women’s Day and presidential elections, with exhibitions to encourage visitor participation,” said Bang Sun-kyu, head of ACC. “This event will be a good opportunity to look into how cultural institutions are evolving and trending to connect with social media, an organic space that connect with the world, rather than static channels.”.
