At the 74th Venice Film Festival, this year’s Golden Lion went to “The Shape of Water” directed by “master of dark fantasy” Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.

Led by the American actress Annette Bening, the 74th Venice International Jury announced on the final day of the Festival on Saturday that it has selected the Sci-Fi romance film directed by del Toro as their top pick. The movie based on the Cold Era depicts a speechless lady working at a remote U.S. laboratory falling in love with an alien creature. The film gained high acclaims from the critics throughout the festival for its metaphor on social inequity and climate change.

“It’s like winning after the marathon,” del Toro said during his acceptance speech. “Stay with what you believe in.” He directed films such as “Hellboy,” “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pacific Rim."
