Cho Nam-joo, 39, the author of best-selling novel "Kim Ji Young Born in 82," on Friday was named the winner of the Writer of Today Award hosted by Minumsa Publishing Co. Depicting the life of a housewife whose career was hiatus because of child upbringing, the novel captured in witty episodes the discriminations and inequality many women face every day, becoming the top-selling novel for the first half of this year. The write will also receive 20 million won (17,460 U.S. dollars).

"I never expected the manuscript that I submitted to the publishing company's Internet homepage to become so popular," Cho said in a telephone interview with the Dong-A Ilbo. "It was so rewarding to hear woman readers saying the book pointed out what they did not realize as problems and man readers acknowledging that the book gave them an opportunity to understand their wives and mothers."
