“I have confidence in the strength of my pitches and my body condition.”

Pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin (30) of the Los Angeles Dodgers expressed confidence after performing the first live pitching since his elbow surgery last year.

According to the Major League’s official website MLB.com, Ryu had 25 pitches against minor league players at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona in the U.S. where his team ran a spring training camp on Monday. Ryu had only been performing bullpen pitching previously, and it was the first time since the surgery that he pitched the ball with batters in the batter’s box as if in a real game.

“I have played only one game in the Major League for the past two years (due to surgeries in my shoulder and elbow). Hence, naturally there are many question marks like the time when I just moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013," Ryu said at an interview at the camp. "I need to demonstrate that I can join the rotational group of starting players."

This year, the Dodgers have formed a group of four starting pitchers starting with Clayton Kershaw, followed by Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda, and Julio Urias. Ryu is fiercely competing for the fifth starter with Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Alex Wood, Brock Stewart, and Ross Stripling. MLB.com said Ryu has taken a meaningful step toward rejoining the roster of starting pitchers.
