Adelina Sotnikova (21) of Russia, the gold medalist in women’s single figure skating competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics who is suspected of doping, has expressed her intention to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“I am taking part in ice shows these days, but I will return to the sports stage one day,” Sotnikova said in a recent interview with Russia’s OK magazine. “I wish to participate in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games and give joy to many people by displaying good performance.”

Since the Sochi Olympics, Sotnikova has been focusing on external activities including ice shows and television programs. She skipped the 2014-2015 season of the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix series due to ruptured ankle ligament. The only medal she has received since the Sochi Olympics is the bronze medal from the fifth round championship of the Grand Prix series in the 2015-2016 season. She has not participated in the Grand Prix series in this season again due to her ankle injury. Currently, she stands a low chance to take part in the Pyeongchang event.

“I used to be wary of and worry about negative public opinions against me,” the Russian figure skater said. “I have grown up now. The Olympic gold medal is in my hands and I made it.”
