Tiger Woods is poised to return to the field after taking leave since his waist surgery in September last year. The 40-year-old has applied to take part in the U.S. Open, a major PGA tournament that will take place at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania next month.

The Professional Golf Association, the event’s host, said on Tuesday, “Woods completed application process on April 5, or three weeks before the application deadline of April 28.” Woods acquired 14 major PGA championships in total including the U.S. Open in 2008, but he has had no title in a major event for nearly eight years.

Even though Woods submitted application, he will not necessarily take part in the event. Woods applied for the U.S. Open in 2014, but failed to show up due to waist surgery.

However, watchers said it could be different this time. On the day when news about his looming comeback was reported, Woods had actual rounding at five holes with Mark O'Meara, a golfer and his close companion, at Bluejack National Golf Club in the outskirts of Huston. It is the first time that Woods played in a real golf course since at the Wyndham Championship in August last year.  Woods said after testing two of his new drivers on the day that he has been improving, but has a long way to go.

U.S. media organizations reported given this recent moves, Woods could make a comeback at the Wells Fargo Championship next week, or the Players Championship that will kick off on May 12.
