“English Premier League Manchester United is interested in signing Son Heung-min. If the deal is signed, it will require at least 70 million euros (about 91.35 billion won),” reported Germany’s Sports1 on Wednesday (Korea time). Sports fans are wondering if Son, after the 2018 Russian World Cup Games, will be able to join the Manchester United, the club Korean football player Park Ji-sung played for.

Son’s performance has already been proven in the English Premier League. The Korean star player, who previously played for the Bundesliga of Germany as a striker known for scoring double digit goals, left Leverkusen to play for Tottenham in 2015. Though he struggled at first adjusting to the team tactics, he later emerged as the league’s main striker along with Harry Kane (England) after a season of trials and errors.

In the 2017-2018 season, Son scored 18 goals (10 assists) in a total of 53 matches, following his 21 goals (seven assists) in 47 league and cup matches during the 2016-2017 season. During the World Cup tournament as of Wednesday, he successfully made a goal through a fantastic left-foot mid-range shot.

The Manchester United is not the only club interested in attracting Son. “Aside from the Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are also targeting Son,” Sport1 reported. “But it is quite unlikely that Tottenham would give up Son to its rival Arsenal. It is also quite uncertain how committed Liverpool is in attracting Son.” The report hints that the Manchester United is the strongest candidate.

The only variant that Son, who has yet to join the “Big Clubs” after the World Cup Games, faces is military service obligations. The 26-year-old player needs to win a gold medal in the Asian Games to be held in Jakarta –Palembang of Indonesia in August to earn military service exemption needed to continue his professional sports career abroad. If this fails, he must transfer to a professional team in Korea by summer next year, as only athletes playing for Korean teams are qualified to play for military-run sports teams.

Son’s military service issue draws attention overseas as well. Sky Sport Italia recently reported on the loss Son will have to undertake if he has to serve the military, pointing out that “Son would have receive a monthly wage of 100 euros (135,000 won), which significantly falls short of 360,000 euros (469.8 million euros), which is what he earns at Tottenham each month. It is expected that the rumors surrounding Son’s transfer should heat up further if Son’s military service issue is resolved,
