Choi Hyeong-min’s face was filled with pride, wiping off the sweat on his face. After receiving the yellow jersey for the first time in his life at on stage 1, he succeeded in securing his position after a lonely race. The victory of a Korean player for two consecutive years is another step closer.

Choi ran the 2018 Tour de Korea’s 202.6-kilometer stage 2 Thursday from the Cheonan Sports Complex in South Chungcheong Province to Yeongju Stadium in North Gyeongsang Province, but failed to come in the top three. However, by coming in with the Peloton, he placed first overall currently for stage 2 with the record of 9 hours 17 minutes 38 seconds. The 2nd and 3rd place went to Ben Perry and Serghei Tvetcov, the same as the previous day.

Tour de Korea gives 10 seconds of bonus time to player who comes in first place by stage. In other words, 10 seconds are deducted from the actual record. Players who come in 2nd and 3rd place get six seconds and four seconds of bonus time, respectively. Remaining players, who come in among the Peloton, will be regarded as coming in with the lead without any bonus time. This is to prevent competition immediately before the finish line, which can inflict big accidents.

Choi Hyeong-min, who ranked 1st place the previous day, took the strategy of coming in with other players without pushing himself too hard. Even this, however, was not easy. In most of the cases, the yellow jersey player would race with the protection of his or her team. Members of the team would bring water and snacks during the race and also block competitors from checking yellow jersey player.

Choi, nonetheless, had to carry out a lonely race from half way through the race as his colleagues, who lacked experience, started to lag behind after 100 kilometers into the race. He had to get items of supply himself. Then, he came in at the Peloton by overcoming the concentrated containing by other players.
