The latest Information and Communications Technology (ICT) showcased in and around the Olympic stadiums and ice rinks has backed the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which has been dubbed the “ICT Olympics” with the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and Internet of Things (IoT) introduced during the global festival. A variety of advanced technologies are making the Winter Games much more fun to watch.

During the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games on Friday, Intel’s 1,218 drones lit up the sky, morphing into the image of a snowboarder and then into the Olympic rings. The drones formed a sharper image than an American flag created by an array of 300 drones at last year’s Super Bowl.

As the number of drones for the opening ceremony was twice that of the performance in Germany, which had featured 500 drones and set the previous world record, the trickiest part was to maintain the space between them to prevent a possible collision. Intel is known to have used software to create colors and shapes from a computer based on GPS.
