Usain Bolt (31), who has been the fastest man on the planet for years, failed to complete his last 100-meter race as the frontrunner before retirement. Bolt ranked third with a time of 9:95 seconds in men’s 100-meter final of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which took place in London, the U.K. on Sunday.

 

Despite having gained the rare experience of failing to win, Bolt looked relaxed. “Justin Gatlin is an amazing competitor. Christian Coleman is young but is hugely talented. Since I lost to such runners, I have no regret,” Bolt said. “I did everything I could. I will not revoke my decision to retire.” Bolt also congratulated Gatlin.

 

Bolt failed to win the men’s 100-meter race in the World Championships for three consecutive events, a feat both Carl Lewis and Maurice Greene of the U.S. achieved, but the Jamaican sprinter has won a total of 14 medals (11 gold medals, two silver, and one bronze) as an individual runner to tie in the category. Bolt will aim for his 15th medal, the most ever for a sprinter, in the 400-meter relay race on Sunday next week. It will be his final race before retirement.
