Koreans take good care of others’ family events. It might be because of that Koreans are considerate and well-mannered as descendants of courteous people in the East. Rather, it is because of that people consider that attending others’ family events are needed to maintain good relations with others. Connecting to people is a valuable asset from a career perspective in both East and West. An online social networking service LinkedIn is an evidence. LinkedIn now has over 400 million users from 200 countries.

LinkedIn is a business-oriented human networking management site. Microsoft acquired the company for 26.2 billion dollars this June. From CEOs, whose compensation is often six-figures, to ordinary employees, users upload their CVs stating their academic backgrounds and work experiences to the site to promote themselves. LinkedIn is a useful tool to headhunters and company recruiters as well. They post job information and search for talents in the world’s best biographical dictionary.’

The Seoul Woman Resources Development Center conducted a survey targeting 500 female college students and announced the result yesterday. It said that 30 percent of respondents considered that human network is the biggest obstacle to finding a job. I wondered the reason. Kim Yong-ran Act or the anti-graft law is taking effect now but women still think that having a good connection is the most effective way to get a job. The job search engine Incruit carried out a survey of its 774 users and most respondents answered that their friends, who were born with a silver spoon, had better jobs as they had good connections (36 percent).

Human network is divided into a "bonding social capital" and "bridging social capital." The former refers to a solid relation bonded by family or friends and the latter is less cohesive one. Recruiting experts say that it is desirable to make a bridging social capital first and shifting it into a bonding social capital. In other words, you need to first create a link in an area you want by applying for an internship or by taking other actions and to use the link as a base to get a regular job later. Creating a competitiveness, being a person who is needed to others, is the priority, instead of resorting to good connections of parents. Choi Soon-sil and Cha Eun-taek, who are favored by President Park Geun-hye, and many others connected to them are continuously imprisoned every day. They give us a lesson of our time that we do not need to stick to personal connections.
