The annual bell-ringing ceremony at the Bosingak pavilion in Seoul, marking the end of a year and the beginning of a new year, and "The Dove of the Seongbukdong (1969),” a poet written by Kim Gwang-seob have been placed on the list of Seoul’s Future Heritage.

The Seoul metropolitan government said on Thursday that it had selected 54 modern cultural assets in Seoul as the city’s Future Heritage in 2016.

The list also include "As Time Goes By (1956)," a poem written on the background of Myeongdong in Seoul by Park In-hwan, and ‘Mujeong: The Heartless (1917)" a novel written by Yi Kwang-soo vividly depicting Seoul under the Japanese colonial rule. Also added on the list were a movie "The Coachman (1961)," which shows the urban Seoul in the 1960s, and dishes like "Seoul Jangsoo Makgeoli (rice alcohol)" and "Seollongtang (beef bone soup)."

Any Seoul citizen can propose an idea for the Seoul Future Heritage and it should be screened by the Future Heritage Preservation Committee and agreed by the owner (or manager) to be on the list.

The Seoul metropolitan government selected 374 items as its Future Heritage when it announced the ‘basic initiative to make modern assets into cultural heritage’ in June 2012. Fifty four items were additionally placed on the heritage list. Once an asset is added on the list of the city’s Future Heritage, the city government issues a certificate to it and a bronze label is attached with the owner’s consent if the item is space or a building.

“We will do our best to preserve Seoul’s Future Heritage that touches Seoul citizens’ common feelings," said Goh Hong-seok, head of the cultural department of the city government.
