KORAIL passengers who experienced inconvenience due to suspended trains will now be compensated, starting as early as next month. Those who purchased tickets with credit cards will be compensated automatically for delays, and without a separate application process.

Korean National Railroad (KORAIL) announced on Thursday that it will improve its ticketing service. According to the plan, KORAIL will compensate up to 10 percent of fares when trains are halted due to service suspensions made by railroad operators. Under the new plan, passengers will receive 10 percent (1 hour before departure), 3 percent (1 to 3 hours), and 10 percent of remaining route after departure of the total fare. While KORAIL made refunds for suspended trains, no compensation was given. The new compensation plan will start within December by KORAIL and SR Co., Ltd, the operator of Suseo Rapid Train.

KORAIL also announced plans to improve its compensation plan for delays. Until now, passengers who experienced delays and wanted to receive compensation had to visit the station and submit the ticket within one year of purchase. Therefore, passengers were not compensated when they lost their tickets or a year passed. However, those who purchased tickets with credit cards will be compensated automatically after a year. Based on the new compensation plan, passengers will get back 12.5 percent of total fare when a train was delayed for more than 20 minutes.
