North Korea is suspected to be developing a self- defense missile system to fortify its airspace. In a report named "Analysis and Prospects on North Korea’s State of Affairs in the first quarter of 2016, researchers Kim Jin-moo, Cho Nam-hoon, Jeong Sang-don, Lee Ho-ryeong, and Jeon Gyeong-joon at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses claimed that North Korea is preparing to launch a surface-to-air missile in order to strengthen its air defense capability.

The researchers said that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered to upgrade its military air-defense system in early May this year, after leading the launch of the new KN-06 surface-to-air intercept missile called "Lightning 5." They also predicted that the country is likely to arrange a new 300mm multiple rocket launcher with enhanced accuracy and wider range by the end of this year. Continued enhancement of AN-2 low-speed invader and drills was also pointed as a notable fact.

Dr. Kim and his colleagues agreed that the North is encouraging a "200-day battle" but its jobless citizens are flocking to support farm work and expand tree nurseries as the operation rate of factories remain at 20-30 percent due to lack of raw material supply. According to the report, the North Korean leadership demanded factories and businesses to build a tree nursery of 1,000 trees per staff during the 200-day battle period for reforestation of the whole nation.
