'Creative economy is Korea's only growth engine,' says Pres. Park

“Creative economy based on science technologies and ICT is a challenge that we must take on for our economic breakthrough and the only growth engine of the Korean economy,” said South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Thursday.

In her speech to celebrate the Day of Science and IT, President Park stressed the need to create a new market by converging technologies with a creative mindset to proactively respond to the fast speed and changing trend of technological innovation and take the lead in the fourth industrial revolution. She said that efforts have been made to improve institutions and revive entrepreneurship based on creative ideas and technologies by putting the idea of creative economy at the center of policy implementation.”

Before the event, the president had a meeting with six of the first-generation scientists in Korea including Dr. Ahn Yeong-ok, who came back to Korea during the 1960s under the invitation of former President Park Chung-hee to the sponsorship program for overseas Korean scientists. The president expressed her gratitude to the guests, saying that today’s Korea has been possible thanks to the scientists who gave up on their stable lives in industrialized countries and spent their youth and entire life on research for the service of their fatherland.

In the afternoon, President Park presided over the Advisory Council on Science and Technology and the Brief on Development Strategy of Bio Industrial Ecosystem and Carbon Resources. The president pointed out “improvement on unnecessary regulations on bio-industry” as an urgent challenge to tackle to enable biotech sector to establish itself as the key industry of the future.
