“The culture space of modern harbor history in Gunsan,” “The culture space of modern history in Mokpo,” and “The culture street of modern history in Yeongju,” which hold cultural heritages of South Korea’s modern history, will be registered as the nation’s cultural assets.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced Monday that it would allow not only individual cultural works such as structures or pieces of literature but also spaces such as towns or streets to be registered as cultural properties. Heritages of modern times that are 50 years old or over are registered as cultural assets, except for designated cultural properties including national treasures.

The culture space of modern harbor history in Gunsan spans the area of 152,476 m² at Jangmi-dong, Gunsan in North Jeolla Province. It shows how the port of Gunsan was opened in 1899 during the time of the Korean Empire and has developed through the Japanese colonial era and industrialization.
