Upon cancellation of a reservation, KTX users will be subject to cancellation fees starting from next month if the reservation is cancelled later than three hours prior to the scheduled train time.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korean Rail Corporation (Korail) announced Monday that the revised Passenger Transport Provision of the Korail will take effect starting July 1. The revision will be applied both to KTX and other trains.

Current policy does not charge users cancellations fees if they cancel their booking at least one hour before the scheduled train time. The canceled seats are up for sale again but about 12-14 percent of the returned tickets are usually left unsold due to time constraints. The revised provision is intended to prevent such incidents from happening.

Detailed criteria for penalty fares, which have not been subdivided into types, have been established as well. Those who evade or resist ticket inspectors will be charged twice the normal rate. Those who are caught illegally using the ticket for more than twice or unlawfully using the discount ticket will be charged 10 times the normal fare. Those who falsify or fabricate the ticket will be charged 30 times the normal fare.
