A data analysis system that identifies the demand for Korean culture overseas will be established, according to the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

“The demand for Korean culture is different from region to region. But we are having a difficulty creating different strategies for different regions due to lack of data,” KOCIS chief Kim Tae-hoon said Monday in a press conference. “In order to establish tailor-made strategies to increase the spread of Korean culture, we are planning to construct an integrated data analysis system that analyzes responses from 10 countries on the fields of Korean culture, arts, content, and tourism.”

A total of 10.4 billion won will be invested from 2019 to 2022 in the construction and operation of the system. When asked if it is spending too much on data collection that is meant for policy-making, Kim said, “We will make the information public so that private companies and researchers can utilize them just like KOTRA provides the public with trade investment information.”

Kim also added that the KOCIS will broaden cultural exchanges with ASEAN countries, Russia and CIS, and at the same time, boost the spread of Hallyu not only in the field of pop culture but also in visual and performance arts.
