South Korean police have agreed with their Russian counterparts to share knowhow in keeping security and protecting athletes and tourists during this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, police said Wednesday.

Korean National Police Agency Commissioner Lee Cheol-seong held talks in Moscow with Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev on Tuesday, local time, and signed a pact on an international police cooperation center, which Russia plan to set up for cooperation with international police forces in the run-up to the 2018 World Cup.

Under the agreement, South Korean and Russian police will cope jointly with international crimes by sharing information on possible terrorism or potentially dangerous people during the World Cup. South Korean police plan to send four police officers to Russia who will work with their Russian counterparts protect Korean residents and tourists during the soccer events.

On Wednesday, Lee met with German Federal Police chief Dieter Romann to discuss ways to expand counterterrorism and security exchanges and to promote security cooperation. The South Korean police chief also visited a German Federal Police bureau, which oversees the GSG 9, an elite police counterterrorism unit, to seek ways to conduct joint drills. Lee plans to meet with Giorgio Toschi, commander of the Italian Finance Police, in Rome, Italy to discuss ways to jointly respond to international terrorist funds and drug crime investigations.
