With the country’s College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) for the 2018 academic year postponed as a result of a five-point-four magnitude earthquake that hit the southeastern region, the Ministry of Education announced Friday its plan for holding an orientation and measures to prevent cheating. Some schools in the Pohang region will continue to be temporarily shut down due to safety concerns following possible aftershocks, according to the ministry.

The ministry has confirmed that students will take test at the same test locations they were originally assigned with, but the test rooms will be changed in a bid to prevent possible cheating that may arise as students already know the classroom and even the seat they should take through the orientation on Wednesday. Thus, the orientation will be held again next Wednesday so that test-takers can check the newly assigned classrooms and seats beforehand.

Students in the Pohang area, where safety inspections were held on schools, will be notified of the new locations they will take test by next Tuesday while orientation schedules have yet to be decided and will be announced later.

“As the levels of damage sustained by schools in Pohang all vary, nothing other than the date on which test locations will be notified has been confirmed,” said a ministry official.

According to the joint inspection of the Ministry of Education, Office of Education, and the Educational Facilities and Disaster Mutual Aid Association on 14 schools designated as test locations in Pohang, nine suffered only slight damage. A more in-depth inspection is being conducted on the other five schools.

The ministry said it would continue to support students in the affected area by providing them with temporary lodgings or spaces to study. Also, it plans to make the extra classrooms of schools not hurt from the earthquake or public libraries available for students who want to prepare for the test at a safe place. Eleven academies in Pohang and North Gyeongsang Province are also cooperating with the ministry to offer study rooms to students free of charge.
