Suwon Hwaseong marks 20th years of UNESCO registration

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the registration of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Suwon Hwaseong Museum in Gyeonggi Province is holding an exhibition from Thursday to December 10 under the theme of “Suwon Hwaseong, the Flower of the Fortress.”

At its Exhibition Hall, pictures of the cultural assets taken by professional photographers as well as the relics, which illustrate the value of the fortress as a cultural asset and the characteristics of the structure, will be displayed along with the Hwaseong seongyeok uigwe (A completion report for the building of Hwaseong Fortress), Seongjodo and Hwaseongdo.

A symposium will be held under the theme of “Fortresses in East Asia and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress” at 2 p.m. on the opening day. The keynote speech will be given by Suwon Hwaseong Research Center Director Lee Dal-ho under the theme of “The 20th Anniversary of the Registration of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress on the UNESCO World Heritage List and Suggestion for its Long-Term Development.”

The symposium will feature presentations and discussions on various topics including the world heritage system and preservation and management of fortresses in Korea, the values of fortresses in Japan, and the values and preservation of the world heritage Himegi Castle in Japan and the ancient city of Ping Yao in China. The Himegi Castle and the ancient city of Ping Yao were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993 and 1997, respectively.
