According to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics Traffic Management Report of the Korea Transportation Research Institute on Sunday, the Olympic Games are expected to attract 1.3 million visitors at home and abroad. Traffic demand is predicted to peak on January 17, the eighth day of the Olympic Games because the number of games held on this day is the largest at 10 and overlaps with the nation’s Lunar New Year holiday period (February 15 to 17). The largest number of people will gather as Olympic spectators added to holiday travelers.

Particularly Pyeongchang, Gangneung, and Jeongseon areas in Gangwon Province, where the Olympic Games are held, will likely to see traffic 1.5 to 2 times as bad as it usually is in the regions during the Olympics. Therefore, “Olympic only lane” is operated for smooth movement of the athletes and executives. On the expressway, “high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane” is operated to give the right-of-way to buses, HOV passengers, and Olympic-related vehicles. On the Yeongdong Expressway in the areas where the Olympic Games are held, “Olympic lane (OL)” will be created to make it available to the athletes, officers and shuttles.

In the city of Gangneung, the Olympic Regional Network (ORN), which is also used by other vehicles, is applied to improve traffic flow by adjusting intersection signal and restricting street parking. The Olympic shuttle buses will mainly use OL and ORN, but in case of emergency such as snowstorm they will use ORN routes.
