U.S. President Donald Trump has officially announced his decision on withdrawal from the Paris climate pact. Many are concerned whether the Paris deal will survive without the U.S., the second-largest carbon emitter in the world.

“The Paris accord is very unfair at the highest level to the United States. In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and it citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord. I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” Trump said in a press conference at the White House. Trump said he would negotiate a new pact, which is fairer to America and its citizens.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama criticized his successor, saying, “This administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future.” The Paris pact is one of the major environmental achievements of the Obama administration.
