U.S President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping that he would honor China’s “One China” policy. It was made during his first phone conversation with Xi after winning the presidential election. Both leaders also agreed to review resuming a bilateral talk. Before inauguration, Trump had a phone conversation with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Dec. 2 last year, showing his intent to use “One China” policy as a leverage to check China. However, reversing his attitude, Trump changed his policy direction toward China, is drawing attention on possible progress in relations between the U.S. and China.

“The two leaders discussed numerous topics and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our 'one China' policy," the White House said. “Officials from both countries would now engage in discussions and negotiations on various issues of mutual interest.”

In addition, Trump met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday local time for the first time in the White House and discussed current issues including North Korea, regional security and currency. Abe has become the first Asian leader having a summit with Trump.
