The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the U.N.’s committee on humanitarian affairs, adopted a resolution on Tuesday local time, condemning North Korea’s violation of human rights. The resolution, approved by consensus, highlights that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is accountable for crimes against humanity in North Korea. The U.N. General Assembly will vote for the resolution next month.

The resolution accused North Korean government institutions, which are controlled by the North Korean leadership, of committing crimes against humanity, alluding to Kim Jong Un’s responsibility. In addition, the resolution called for actions on labor exports and the harm caused by nuclear and missile development on North Koreans.

After the resolution was adopted, North Korean officials to the U.N. held a press conference and told reporters, “The U.S. and South Korea are using political tactics and drafted a resolution, based on fabricated information and lies by North Korean defectors, in order to isolate and collapse the North Korea regime.” North Korean officials referred “the Choi Soon-sil scandal” twice during the press conference to defend the North Korean administration, saying, “The South Korean administration has been manipulated by a female shaman who is only an amateur in politics.”
